So far we have been sailing along beautifully – the wind has been perfect and the sea calm, a perfect start to our 860nm crossing to Bermuda. There has been no moon, so the nights have been dark, but therefore a lot of stars. Even the milky way has been quiet bright at times. We have been spotting constellations and learning the names and uses in navigation of different stars. Yesterday we were extra lucky as we spotted our first whale! The blows where visible quiet a few times and even the back and fin surfaced, but not long enough for me to identify it. Just before dusk our fishing reel went flying out, I ran to stop it and get it in and saw loads of splashing at the end of the line. so no mahi mahi, a tuna maybe? They tend to be wild and fight.. It turned out to be a big massive fish (as Tim says) and not a Tuna. Teeth, and striped body. We’ve seen them at fish markets but I don’t know the name. As dinner was already underway, we decided for now to fillet it and put it in the freezer for later 🙂
Another lovely day of sailing today, barely any clouds and moving along smoothly – 600nm to go 🙂
